Growing demand for seamless wireless coverage helps Axell Wireless win the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2009

Global need for connectivity drives a 70 percent export rate from the UK.

Axell Wireless has been awarded the UK’s most prestigious award for enterprise, The Queen’s Award. The award, which is announced on the Queen’s birthday, is conferred in recognition of outstanding performance in one of three fields, ‘International Trade’, ‘Innovation’, and ‘Sustainable Development’. Axell Wireless has won the award for the first time in acknowledgement of its achievements in the export field and will receive the award at its headquarters over the coming months.

The world is becoming increasingly reliant on wireless networks for communications, information and entertainment, and wireless communications have become integrated into everyday life as a result. Consistent and high-quality coverage is now expected as a matter of course from city centres to isolated rural areas, and any failure to connect can have a significant impact on the business or consumer concerned. Axell Wireless designs and manufactures wireless network systems to deliver seamless and cost-effective coverage irrespective of location, enabling operators to offer their customers the mobile experience they expect.

The exponential growth in Axell Wireless’ export business is not just down to a demanding consumer audience however – advances in technology have changed how the public safety services and transport bodies work. Rescue services rely on vital information that can only be transmitted via wireless networks to make the teams truly effective, such as fire crews who need up-to-date floor plans of a burning building and to check databases for information on hazardous chemicals.

These developments, combined with regulatory changes such as plans to install the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) with uniform and unique signalling applications throughout Europe, have made seamless and fully redundant coverage a necessity. Axell Wireless with its market leader position in the public safety services was in the ideal position to capitalise on the potential for growth.

“Our success in growing our export market so dramatically over the past three years is a fundamental recognition of the value of wireless technology. Wireless networks aren’t just about people making phone calls when they’re in a tunnel; they’re about helping teams to do their jobs more efficiently and more safely. With trains flying along at 300km/h, your margin for human error is smaller than ever, so it’s reassuring to know that there’s a system in place that will cause the train to stop automatically if there’s a ‘red’ signal, or if coverage breaks down. Winning this award is not just recognition of the value the international markets place on Axell Wireless’ technology however; it’s also recognition of the enormous efforts of our staff and suppliers we work with both at home and abroad,” said Ian Brown, CEO of Axell Wireless.

Axell Wireless provides both ‘off-the-shelf’ and bespoke solutions for four primary technology sectors – cellular (such as GSM, EDGE, UMTS, CDMA 450, WiFi & WiMAX), public safety (TETRA, TETRAPOL, GSM-R, UHF, VHF, APCO25), Broadcast (FM, AM, DVB-H) and specialist (e.g. military communications). These solutions are provided for applications and environments that include tunnels (including road, rail and metros), buildings (e.g. airports, stadiums, power plants, shopping centres, office buildings), rural and remote environments, and on transportation networks such as trains and aeroplanes. Axell Wireless provides systems directly to end users including network operators and in partnership with systems integrators.
